Australians Think LCD’s are Hotter Than Plasma TVs

A poll conducted by IDC (International Data Corporation) has shown that consumers in Australia prefer LCD (liquid crystal display) panels over plasma TVs when it comes to flat screen televisions. Sales of LCD televisions in that country are expected to grow to 835,215 units annually during the 2005-2009 period. That’s a significantly higher figure compared to the growth forecast for plasma TVs, which is expected to be in the half-million mark.

The folks down under apparently have greater confidence in newer LCD technology. The perception that LCD televisions will experience more dramatic price reductions also has an impact on consumer preferences. According to IDC, screens that measure 40 inches and more will experience a greater sales growth, but that models with smaller screens will not be affected adversely since they will find other market niches. Apparently, many consumers are starting to place flat screen televisions in areas such as the kitchen and the bathroom. The bathroom?

Plasma TVs and LCD TVs are gaining increased market share in Australia as buyers move away from conventional CRT sets. The sleek designs, better viewing quality and higher broadcasting standards are influencing consumers’ decisions. The market there is becoming more competitive as well. Established players such as Samsung, Sharp and LG are facing challenges from newer entrants like BenQ and JNC.

I still can’t get over the idea of a plasma TV or an LCD TV in the bathroom. I never realized that many people spent that much time in the bathroom that they’d need a high-end television set to keep them entertained while they carry on with whatever their business is in there.
