LGEM Planning to Dominate Malaysia’s Plasma TV Market

According to an article by Wong Li Za in “The Star,” LG Electronics Malaysia (LGEM) is planning to lead the digital television industry in Malaysia in 2005. As of May this year, LGEM has already captured 28 percent of the Malaysian plasma TV market. The company’s target revenue for the year is RM800 million, although financial figures may decline slightly because of the impact of the incorporation of LGEM on first quarter sales. Another factor that may affect revenue is the lowering of plasma TV prices. Funds amounting to RM11.4 million (US$ 3 million) has been allocated by the company to help realize its income goal for the next several years.

LGEM’s bestsellers when it comes to plasma TV’s are its PX4RV and RTPX10 models — while its mid-range models are priced from RM12,000 to RM13,000. However, the company’s success model is to get as many people to buy its wide range of high-end products. Further contributing to LGEM’s bottom line are its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreements to supply plasma TV’s and LCD TV’s to other multinational digital display providers, such as Sony and Toshiba, among others.
