Personal computer manufacturer Sahara Computers and Electronics (SCEL) counts a plasma TV among its offerings as it enters the Indian lifestyle market. Priced at approximately $3,200, the Sahara 42-inch plasma TV includes features such as SRS True Surround XT, virtual 5.1 channel sound with two-way speakers and a fan-free design to reduce noise.
According to SCEL chief operating officer George Van Der Merwe, the lifestyle market is growing by leaps and bounds and that India is a part of that market. Naturally, with the increasing purchasing power of Indians today, SCEL wants to grab a share of that market with its new electronics offerings, such as the plasma TV.
SCEL plans to make inroads into the Indian lifestyle market with other consumer electronics products such as a camera notebook, digital cameras, MP3 players and a computer memory flash device. However, there’s grumbling in some quarters that SCEL will be inundating the Indian market with “substandard” products from China. Is this really the case? Let’s wait for feedback from Indian consumers about this issue.
