Pioneer’s 3D Television Plans

The concept of three-dimensional (3D) television has been around for quite some time, just like 3D movies. In fact, a lot of people have experienced watching so-called 3D movies at one time, wearing those funny-looking eyeglasses with red and green lenses. But the day could be coming soon when we will get to watch true 3D television right at home, and without wearing those weird eyepieces.

According to a report by Peter Familari, published in the online version of the Herald Sun, a prototype 3D plasma TV developed for Pioneer’s commercial division was on exhibit at the 2005 Berlin IFA (Internationalle Funkausstellung) trade show in Germany. It might be quite some time yet before end consumers are able to use this product – a Pioneer executive at the Berlin IFA trade show wouldn’t answer a question on when the product would go mainstream.

But imagine what viewing programs on a 3D plasma television would be like! In the same way that plasma display panel (PDP) technology revolutionized this staple appliance, so would 3D television change how we watch TV. Educational programs will become more educational, entertainment shows will become more entertaining, scary movies will become scarier – the possibilities boggle the mind. One thing looks certain: it will probably even become harder to drag the couch potatoes away from the TV set, and their number might even increase a hundredfold.
